Summary

The building was constructed in 1922 for NV Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken, at a time when the light bulb industry was thriving. The architect was Dirk Roosenburg. Later, the factory produced radio tubes, tungsten filaments, and eventually electron tubes. It didn’t acquire its gray-white color until 1953. The building ceased to function as a factory in the early 1970s and stood vacant in the early 1980s. Since its redevelopment in the late 1990s, after being saved from demolition, De Witte Dame has been bustling with activity. This beautiful building is the result of a unique repurposing project in the heart of Eindhoven. Architect Bert Dirrix played a major role in this. He ensured that the simple elegance and integrity of the original design were preserved by choosing simple, industry-inspired materials: concrete, galvanized steel, glass, and Western red cedar. De Witte Dame houses a wonderful mix of organizations: institutions with a social impact, innovative companies, and welcoming amenities. The Eindhoven Library, the Municipal Health Service (GGD), the ANWB, Fontys University of Applied Sciences, hair salons, and various restaurants and cafes ensure that people from all walks of life visit the building. Clausplein has now been transformed into a green gathering place, making the terraces of Radegast and DENF part of a green oasis. Victoria Park is currently being landscaped and will become a central gathering place, as well as a new green gem for the residents and visitors of Eindhoven. A park for the city, a garden for the neighborhood. A quintessentially Eindhoven spot surrounded by Philips landmarks and home to the 7-meter-tall steel bust of Gerard Philips.
